Radon is a colourless, odourless gas that is produced from the natural breakdown of uranium in rocks and soil. It comes from the ground and is found in every home, though not always at elevated levels.
What is the Danger?
Over time, exposure to elevated levels of radon can cause lung cancer. In fact, Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, after smoking. In Québec, 10 to 16% of lung cancer deaths are attributed to radon. That's why it's very important to be aware of the level of radon in your home. Health Canada recommends that any home with a radon level above 200 Bq/m3 should take action to lower their level.
How do you find out your Radon Level?
To know the concentration of radon in your house, you must use a measuring instrument called a dosimeter. It is advisable to conduct that measurement over a period of at least three months and to perform radon measurement during winter. You can measure the radon concentration in your house by yourself or hire a professional. It doesn’t matter where you’re located or what the levels were in your neighbours’ homes if they’ve tested. It doesn’t matter whether your home is old or new, small or large. While it’s true that some communities have a higher average radon level, each house is different and elevated radon levels can be found anywhere.
Measures to take if Radon Concentration Exceeds Canadian Guideline
Radon is a gas, so it travels easily through the soil, working its way toward the surface. It escapes into our homes wherever they’re in contact with the soil; finding its way in through cracks or around pipes and drains. Here are the corrective actions you can take to lower concentration of radon in your home:
- Seal cracks in the foundation
-Seal openings in contact with soil
-Ensure that drains are covered and ventilated to the outside
-Improve ventilation in your home, especially in the basement
